Mustang Dynamometer Upgrades Power Absorption Unit at AEM Performance Electronics
Twinsburg, Ohio, June 29, 2021: Mustang Dynamometer, an American manufacturer of quality, industry-leading, accurate, high performance dynamometers and related products, announced the completed upgrade of an existing dynamometer at AEM Performance Electronics in Hawthorne, California. The reliable MD-1750 large roll chassis dynamometer, was originally installed in 2001. Although pleased with the installed equipment, AEM has shifted into the research and development of the performance EV market segment. Electric Vehicle drivetrains output big torque at low RPM creating a need for more steady state loading capability. They contacted Mustang Dynamometer and the suggestion was adding a second power absorber unit (PAU) to the dyno and to upgrade both new hardware and software of the controls system.
About AEM
AEM Performance Electronics, originally Advanced Engine Management, Inc. is a leading developer and supplier of electronic control and monitoring systems for performance automotive applications and is world renowned and highly regarded by enthusiasts of trucks and sports cars, both domestic and imports. AEM Performance Electronics is a wholly owned subsidiary of Holley Performance Products. With the increased focus on electric vehicles, AEM converted a Ford Mustang GT (pictured on the dyno) to be an EV with a Tesla Large Drive Unit from a Model S.
About the Upgrade
The MD-1750 model dyno has the largest set of rollers in the industry at 50-inches, and designed for testing large and very high horsepower vehicles without concern for tire slippage. A pair of 50” diameter rollers act as the road-load mechanism which provide inertia-based performance testing at various speed and torque outputs. With a maximum speed of 250 mph, and a horsepower measurement rating of 3,500-hp, the MD-1750 is by far the fastest and most powerful dynamometer available. Another major part of the upgrade is new software and hardware to the controls and data acquisition systems. This particular dynamometer installed at AEM is interesting because it is installed outdoors.
